The Coker baseball team will start at noon and the Cobra softball team will start at 1 p.m. and the February temperatures will be in the high sixties or seventies as the games progress -- seemed these warm days would never get here this winter but they are back.
I came down to the office this Saturday morning and as I was opening the door several frosh baseball players were heading over to the field - a little after 8 a.m. Yesterday I got this great promotional video from a former student and a former Coker baseball player, Tom Oschip. He is helping to manage a brand new sports park in Northeastern Ohio call Victory Park. When I saw the video a fleeting thought was it's a good thing he learned a little about field management when on the Cobra team. While I did get a strange look when I mentioned that field maintenance was a good skill to develop, I do believe the player I said that to will feel it in the future. Often, when you are doing the things you really enjoy doing, you are a bit more committed than you might have ever expected. In fact, bet if I rode my bicycle down to the softball field Coach Hanna is probably dragging the baselines getting ready for today's souble header after yesterday's opening season victories.
Division II coaches often find themselves not only the leader of the team but also the primary maintenance crew, the primary recruiter, the primary general manager, the primary equipment manager. Those things are part of the investment for doing the things you really want to do - instead of opting for a "real" job that might give you time to enjoy part of those things on some weekends.
This blog is an account of some of the many activities that are going on at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. The majority of content is from R.A. Puffer, a professor in the communication department. It is an attempt to provide some ideas about how much goes on at this dynamic liberal arts college in Northeast South Carolina -- in Hartsville, about half way between Charlotte, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC.

A funny-weather Spring Break
** Winter weather postponed conference basketball games though they have now all been played and Coker's two teams have had good seasons come to an end.
** Earlier in the week snow at Erskine postponed the baseball game and the team is playing at home today but the temperature at noon is still hovering around 40degrees.
** The softball team was to be at Limestone but they still have snow on their field, so that trip is postponed.
** Saw some facebook photos of the choir trip to D. C. and noticed that in what is often a land of Spring blossoms there was snow on the ground.
** Professor Mac Williams writes from Savannah, GA that the International Student Organization has encountered nasty weather, though they did do a service project at an elementary school and enjoyed a meal at Paula Dean's restaurant.
** Getting very close on the announcement of a new president for Coker College.
** And, while it has nothing to do with weather, we have a major phone system changeover taking place this week as Coker goes digital with phones -- enhancing service and saving money.
** Now, if I can just catch up as I planned to do when this Spring Break week began.
Adding some video footage of the Conference Tourney game between the Coker girls and Pieffer University on Tuesday night. (twice postponed)

February Spring
Ok, the temperature is 73 degree and though there is a warm wind blowing, this is as hot as it sometimes gets in my hometown (Rome, NY) in July. So, a perfect day for the home opener of the Coker College baseball season. And, the Cobras snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over Claflin. It was also the day that the Jazz II dance class ventured out of doors for a different venue for their dance. The dancers, and their instructor - Professor Ebright -- enjoyed the change of scenery. The dancers perform their Spring Concert (again in February), which will open on Thursday, February 19. It is a great day to be part of the Coker College community!
